Is ADHD Making You Question Your Potential Or Self-Worth?

Do you find it difficult to stay focused, on-task, or present in the moment?

Are you restless, impulsive, or easily bored by school, your career, or relationships? Do you feel overwhelmed when faced with multiple tasks or responsibilities?

Perhaps you’re the parent of a child or teen who is struggling with ADHD, and it’s starting to manifest as anxiety, depression, or defiance. Or maybe you want your young one to have access to resources that could enable them to thrive, and you’re hoping ADHD therapy can help.

ADHD Can Have A Broad Impact On A Person’s Life At Any Age

You may feel frustrated because no matter how hard you try or how much you work you can’t seem to realize your potential. The inability to be present, actively listen to, and engage with your partner may be causing tension in your relationship.

Alternatively, you may be the parent of a child or teen coping with ADHD, and you’re hoping that counselling can shed some light on their behaviour. For instance, perhaps they isolate themselves or argue with family and peers. Or maybe your child has emotional outbursts or a low threshold for tolerating distress.

Regardless of age, ADHD can have a powerfully negative influence over a person’s entire well-being, but it doesn't have to be a life sentence. At Aligned Minds, working with one of our ADHD therapists can help you (or your child) feel more organized, at peace, and confident in your self-worth.

ADHD Is A Common And Often Misunderstood Condition

Whether working, attending class, or merely trying to function in the world—everyone gets distracted. However, for people with ADHD, it can feel impossible to stay or get back on track. That constant state of distraction creates gaps in learning, affects work performance, and generates disconnection in relationships.

Unfortunately, we live in a society that demands us to multitask and take on as much as possible. We’re automatically expected to shift our attention from one thing to another, which is inefficient for most and almost impossible for people with ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Is Only Part Of The Equation

When adults—and particularly children and teens—run into the limitations created by their uniqueness, it can lead to other problems. Chronic frustration, low self-esteem, risk-taking behaviour, depression, and anxiety—as well as the temptation to self-medicate—are all possibilities.

In addition to being unsustainably busy and pulled in all directions, schools and employers cater to the neurotypical brain—the average person’s learning style and capabilities. Anyone outside of those parameters is often misunderstood or penalized for being different. Sadly, that means people with ADHD—especially children and teens—are often seen as lazy, defiant, or even incorrigible.

However, at Aligned Minds, our therapists understand that ADHD doesn’t define you. You are a person, not a disorder, and we want to help you get to a place where you can embrace your uniqueness and learn to thrive.

ADHD Therapy Offers Comprehensive Care For All Ages

At Aligned Minds, we strive to be a one-stop-shop for all things ADHD by providing evidence-based and holistic treatment options for adults, families, couples, teens, and children.

Our counsellors offer neurodiverse-, 2SLGBTQIA-, and BIPOC-affirming care for all of our clients, creating a treatment plan that speaks to each individual’s experience with ADHD. We also administer a comprehensive assessment that helps us get to the core of the issue and what we can do to minimize the impact of symptoms both in the long and short term.

What You Can Expect From ADHD Therapy

Our ADHD counselling sessions focus on helping you gain a better understanding of yourself, your personality, and how you process information. We’ll teach you valuable skills for refocusing, staying on task, grounding yourself, and communicating effectively.

We can help you reinforce healthy habits that improve functioning by using timers, planners, task lists, or alarms to better manage time and keep track of obligations. We’ll also show you how to set realistic goals, reinforce your working memory, and remain present in the moment so you don’t get lost by hyper-focusing on the past or future.

Couples counselling can also be very helpful in exploring how ADHD can impact communication, connection, and intimacy between you and your partner.

Because ADHD medication is beneficial for some clients, we can also collaborate with your psychiatrist or family physician to help you get the most out of therapy.

Some Of The Tools We Use In ADHD Counselling

Although ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, it has the potential to exacerbate or even cause certain mental health issues down the line, including anxiety and depression. So our ADHD counsellors draw from a range of both empirically-driven and holistic therapeutic models to create a comprehensive approach to treatment that is best suited for you and your needs.

For instance, we may use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy—or CBT for ADHD. This intervention enables us to challenge any underlying limiting beliefs or negative thinking patterns by looking at the facts and making sure emotions are in proportion to situations. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on helping clients embrace what can’t be controlled while challenging those things that can be changed.

Our holistic approach also draws from various mindfulness-based strategies. These tools can help you slow the brain down, tune into the five senses, and notice what is going on in the body and your environment. We can also help families and couples explore nuanced approaches for addressing their unique, presenting concerns and the impact of relational patterns in neurodiverse relationships.

So whether you are a teen, an adult, a family, or a couple—ADHD therapy can help you achieve your goals and realize your true potential. With our help, it is possible to align your life with your highest self by identifying your strengths and learning skills to support yourself.

ADHD brains are hardwired to be creative, motivated, and capable of thinking outside of the box. At Aligned Minds, we want to help you put those strengths to work so you can realize your potential for confidence, happiness, and success.

Perhaps You Still Have Concerns About ADHD Therapy…

I don't want to be labelled with this condition.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference—not a mental illness, which simply means you (or your child/teen) have a unique brain that affects how you move through this world. The truth is: we all fall somewhere on the vast neurological spectrum, and we all have areas of strength and adversity.

Moreover, we’re all worthy of love and acceptance no matter what our neurological wiring is. With appropriate support from our neurodivergent-affirming therapists, you can take advantage of this uniqueness and learn how to thrive—whether it’s in school, your career, or your relationships.

I don't want to take medication as a part of ADHD treatment.

Although it can be helpful for some, not everyone with ADHD requires medication. It may be that your most pressing symptoms stem from depression, anxiety, trauma, or stress that is complicating an otherwise manageable issue.

That’s why we also offer a comprehensive holistic assessment process that differentiates these concerns to target the root problem. Regardless of your situation, you ultimately have control over whether or not medication is used.

I think I can manage ADHD without therapy.

ADHD can limit your ability to achieve goals, maintain healthy relationships, and handle the stress that comes up in everyday life. So despite your best efforts, you may not see just how much this condition is affecting you and your ability to actualize the life you desire.

However, with the support of our ADHD therapists and neurodivergent-affirming team, you can feel more balanced, confident, and capable of managing your time and your life better.

You Can Feel Calm, Focused, And Accepted

If frustration, impulsivity, or isolation—or the inability to focus, finish tasks, and manage emotions is preventing you from living the capable, peaceful life you desire, ADHD therapy with Aligned Minds can help.
